The VisualMED System - Architecture

VisualMED is a mission-critical application with hardware and software configured for 24 x 7 uptime. The three-tiered client server architecture is scaleable and can support any number of concurrent users.

Fault-tolerant, scaleable hardware

VisualMED relies on multiple database servers at the back end, operating with RAID technology. Failover controllers provide for operational redundancy. In the middle tier, Windows2000 servers can be added incrementally to support additional client workstations. At the client end, touch-capable thin screens enhance the functionality of the unique graphical user interface. Hardware function can be monitored offsite to verify performance. The system can operate in true three-tier mode, a thin-client architecture, or a combination of the two (see diagram).

Flexible, modular software

VisualMED data is stored in Oracle 8i tables running under UNIX while the NT middle tier contains the business logic. Middle tier objects share a pool of database connections on an as-needed basis to isolate transactions and reduce resource requirements. Using Dynamic Server Allocation (DSA) technology middle tier COM objects are instantiated on demand and allocated to run on the most available middle tier machine. Clients use DCOM and MIDAS to exchange information with objects on the middle tier servers. Screen forms and input logic are maintained on client workstations. VisualMED can communicate with legacy systems using HL-7 protocol or customized interfaces, and with PACS and other available image storage devices using DICOM. OEM technology allows for remote site technical support.
